The first day of school for Kansas City public schools is right around the corner. If you or your clients need assistance with school supplies, school transportation, after school programs, or other logistics, we’ve put together a list of resources that may be helpful.

Clothing and school supplies

Back to school clothing, backpacks, and other supplies add up quickly. Here are a few ways to access free or discounted items for kids this year.

Kansas City Kansas Public Schools: Students (early childhood through 12th grade) will receive all supplies on the first day of school. Pencil boxes (up to grade 5) and backpacks are not included.

Kansas City Public Schools Summerfest: Free backpacks, school supplies, and immunizations distributed Saturday, Aug. 14. You MUST pre-register for the event.

Community Services League: Contact your local office to receive free backpacks and school supplies according to your child’s grade level.

Tax-free weekend: Buy school supplies, clothing, electronics, and even diapers without sales tax from Aug. 6-8 in Missouri.

Child care assistance

Head Start: Education services and parent support for parents with children from birth to age 5.

Child care assistance in Kansas: Apply for the Hero Relief Child Care Assistance Program funded with federal COVID-19 relief dollars.

Apply for Missouri Child Care Assistance: Apply for assistance with children under the age of 13 or children with special needs.

Health and Safety

Kansas and Missouri CARES Act and Coronavirus Relief: Learn what resources and funds are available to you for economic relief regarding COVID-19

This year, more than ever, it will be important to keep up with the changing policies and plans for COVID-19 protections. Be sure to join your school district’s email and text message lists to stay up to date with mask mandates, school closures, and more.
