Kansas City Domestic Violence Facts, Resources and More

Beginning in 1987, domestic violence activists organized National Domestic Violence Awareness Month to be recognized each October, bringing awareness to the widespread issue and resources to prevent it as well as help those experiencing it.

Domestic violence is one of the leading reasons individuals experience homelessness. For National Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2022, GKCCEH has compiled national and local resources to aid victims of domestic violence and put a stop to the tragedies that result from domestic violence in our nation and local communities.

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NACAD)

As a voice of victims and home for advocates, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NACAD) leads, mobilizes and raises their voices to support efforts that demand a change of conditions that lead to domestic violence such as patriarchy, privilege, racism, sexism, and classism. To learn more about NACAD, click here.

In an effort to raise awareness and support this month, NACAD developed this page to teach others about the significance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and help advocates get involved to make change.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline

The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available to victims of domestic violence 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With call, chat and text options, the organization is doing everything in its power to give victims safe and viable options to receive, in some cases, live-saving assistance. The National Domestic Violine Hotline wrotes this when it comes to National Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2022 (here referred to as DVAM):

“Why DVAM? DVAM is a chance for anyone and everyone to unite in the work to end domestic violence. We invite advocates, loved ones, supporters, and political leaders to join together in solidarity to listen to and uplift survivors directly. With so many people speaking in a unified voice throughout October, we can raise our collective awareness about domestic violence to end abuse for good.”
